Philadelphia: Gunman pumps 13 shots into police car

The gunman fired 13 shots from a semiautomatic pistol into Hartnett's car as the officer sat in the driver's seat, a law enforcement source told CNN. The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. in west Philadelphia.

I know the officer was hit several times but that shooter must have been a terrible shot or the policeman has nine lives.  Lucky to have survived.

He survived?
Thank God.

Yes, he survived.

And, what about this song about good guys with guns thwarting bad guys with guns that Ted Cruz and Co. keep telling me about?  You know ......... the only thing that stops bad guys with guns are good guys with guns.  But, hey, we need good guys with semi-automatic pistols to stop these bad guys with semi-automatic pistols.

Fred,
The officer (Good guy) did stop the bad guy after he was shot. The officer called for help and SHOT the bad guy. The 30-year-old suspect at least three times.

The officer was ambushed! Police are calling it an “attempted assassination.”In a press conference, Commissioner Ross said the gun used in the attack was a stolen police firearm.“It was stolen back in October of 2013. It was reported, and that is one of the things you regret the most when an officer’s gun is stolen, when it is used against one of your own.”

Commissioner Ross says the suspect has given a full confession, saying he did it in the name of Islam.“According to him, police bend laws that are contrary to the teachings of the Quran.”

I get that, but I thought the purpose was to stop the bad guys before they hurt the good guys.  This good guy took 3 whacks and luckily he lived (don't know how his life might be impacted later).  The semi-automatic pistol pumped out 13 rounds before the poor guy had time to react.

You mentioned it was an ambush.  That's my point about the 'Good Guy' vs the 'Bad Guy' thing.  You get it, but I'm not sure Ted Cruz does.  Maybe he's watched too many tv shows.  'Good Guy' vs 'Bad Guy' doesn't always work out well for the 'Good Guy' except in the movies or on tv.

Well, he was stopped before he had a chance to hurt or kill anyone else, wasn't he?

Maybe we could wait to find out what happened before politicizing this

This incident reminds me of an excellent piece in the August 13th issue of Time entitled "What it is like to be a Cop in America". It was written by Karl Vick as he chronicled some squad car cops in Philadelphia. Here is a snipped of what it is about. To read the entire thing you must either be a subscriber or go to your local library to try to snag it. Well worth the read as it vividly details what  cops face every day.

What? The officer was ambushed?

Ambushed =
A sudden attack made from a concealed position
Those hiding in order to attack by surprise
To attack from a concealed position

The officer did not see the suspect before the suspect shot him? No way to stop that. But once the officer became aware he stopped the bad guy.

A crazed man shoots a cop and you blame the semi-auto gun? Lets put the bad guy in jail for life and leave lawful gun-owners alone. It's real simple.
