Ok, maybe it isn't a big, big deal, but it seems even many gun owners agree with the President on this. Maybe even more surprising is that a majority of R-Tribe members do, too.
President Obama rolled out a package of executive actions on guns this week. The changes included clarifying rules meant to broaden the use of background checks by private sellers, allocating money for mental health treatment, and adding more staff at the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to help enforce existing regulations.
The changes were modest in scope -- experts and even the NRA agreed that their overall impact would be small. That didn't stop Obama's critics from fiercely denouncing the proposals. But the president predicted the public would be on his side. The actions would be supported by an "overwhelming majority of the American people, including gun owners," he said Monday.
As it turns out, he was right.
A new CNN/ORC survey of 1,000 Americans finds that the public supports Obama's plan by a 2-1 ratio: 67 percent of respondents favored the executive actions, while 32 percent opposed them. Even more striking, a similar share of people in gun-owning households -- 63 percent -- supported the measures.
Even more striking: 51 percent of Republicans support Obama's executive action on guns. When's the last time 51 percent of Republicans agreed with Obama on anything?

Great poll data. You know, if we could find a way to counter the hysteria of the entrenched interests we could make real progress on improving public safety while preserving gun rights.
I watched the town hall meeting on CNN about guns with the President last night. My expectations were low. But, I was pleasantly surprised. Even though some of the people opposed the president's views, there seemed to be a genuine attempt at having an actual conversation. I found that refreshing in light of the dreary parade we are accustomed to seeing on TV and on interenet boards when the subject of guns comes up. There was little of the talking past each other, and none of the hysterical pronouncements about "gettin' yur guns", or the silly gloating about S&W's share price. Very refreshing.

I wanted to watch the town hall meeting but failed to note it was on CNN and not any of the networks.

I guess that it is no coincidence that, with the NRA absent, the show largely avoided the histrionics that usually substitute for actual discussion on the issue.

The NRA supports the 2nd amendment and gun owners across our country everyday. They do what needs to be done. As evidenced below they are very, very effect at stopping phony gun control in Washington.
So there was absolutely no need for them to participate with CNN. They will however debate the president any time where both have the same amount of time to respond.
The NRA is not concerned about anti-gun people who complain and pout about them not attending the CNN show!
Entering his final year in office, the president appeared resigned to the fact that he will make little progress on the issue during his tenure. “It won’t happen during this Congress,” he said. “It won’t happen during my presidency.”

Who was complaining or pouting? I, for one, was content that those petulant children decided to sulk off stage while real americans came together for an adult discussion.
BTW, Did you watch the Town Hall meeting?
It really was quite good.
Why are you afraid of having this discussion?

Fred,
Did you look at the complete poll? Look at questions 1, 2, 4 and 5. The answers to those questions do not support the president. This is one strange poll??

This is Hairsplitting.
Fred was speaking about the public opinion on the executive actions.
But, focus on the questions that gave a negative for Obama while ignoring the others.
How very unsurprising.

Ok. Common, this was the focus of his executive action. I'm willing to have a conversation (and anyone else who wants to join in). Which one(s) of these proposals do you have an issue with?
