Incumbent Hellam Supervisors Booted in Yesterday's Election

Came across this story in today's YDR.

Candidates for the FRESH Plan won in Hellam Township in the board of supervisors race, defeating two incumbents.

Four candidates faced off for two, 6-year spots in Tuesday's election.

Dave Miller, earning 874 votes, and Phil Smith, 830, had won in the Republican primary and were a part of the FRESH Plan, or Fiscally Responsible & Economically Sustainable Hellam, team.

They defeated incumbents Mike Martin, with 508 votes, and Stephen Wolf, 481, who were running as Democrats under the Hellam Smart Growth slate of candidates.

Now I know what you're saying; "Nice story Lager. But why should I care?"

I call your attention to one of the defeated Hellam Supervisors, Mike Martin.

Long time visitors to the old Exchange certainly remember a poster by the name of "Caretaker", who eventually changed his posting moniker to "Relative Bearing" Mike Martin was the person behind those names.

How do I know this....To be fair, I cannot say with 100% certainty the Martin was that poster. I can however say with 99.999999% certainty he is. And it's too long to go into here and now, and to be honest I hadn't really thought about it in a long time, but read about what Supervisor Martin and his fellow incumbent were fighting about in the year before the election......

Perdue Agribusiness has taken preparatory actions against Hellam Township, which has opposed the company's plan to build a soybean processing plant in Conoy Township, Lancaster County.

......Perdue has not filed a lawsuit, DeYoung said. Rather, the actions will help Perdue to prepare for the lawsuit it expects to receive from Hellam Township should the company get cleared to build the plant.

DeYoung said Perdue also felt compelled to act after reading Hellam Township Chair Mike Martin's recent LNP op-ed criticizing Perdue.

In an interview, Martin said Perdue has been unwilling to consider taking steps that would reduce the 208 tons of hexane the plant would emit annually under the current proposal.

"That's four times the amount that's allowed in this area," Martin said. The company's workaround to the air-pollution rules, Martin said, will be to purchase emissions "credits" from other parts of the state, giving Perdue permission to pollute at the proposed level.

Busino said Hellam Township has spent about $20,000 in township money, as well as $6,000 in privately raised funds, to pay for consultants to fight the company's plan. It's money he said is aimed at protecting the community.

"Hexane is an irritant," Busino said. "It can adversely effect most everyone, but especially children and the elderly."

On top of that, Martin wrote to the Lancaster Newspaper that their reporting was going to get him killed.

Martin referred to an LNP story in which Conoy Township Supervisors Chairman Stephen Mohr angrily criticized Hellam Township for delaying the Perdue project, costing Conoy revenue.

Martin said LNP’s false statements resulted in Hellam supervisors deciding to move Thursday’s meeting to a larger building and have police on hand.

“I am holding LNP responsible for any injury, property damage, or loss of life that occurs as a result of LNP’s yellow journalism,” he wrote in an email to the newspaper.

I'm telling you guys, that's our guy RB.

Interesting.

There would be some legitimacy to Hellam's concerns if the prevailing winds came from the east.   I was always puzzled by the silence from Elizabethtown and Township and other Lanco communities downwind of the proposed plant.

Re: Incumbent Hellam Supervisors Booted in Yesterday's Election

As I recall, "Caretaker" AKA "Relative Bearing" had some crazy stances on a lot of subjects and always had a bunch of web articles from dubious sources to back up his theories, conjecture, and innuendo. The unfortunate thing was that the numerous articles rarely contained even an ounce of fact and the authors of those articles were not deterred by the lack of factual information contained in their diatribes. Also, when presented with factual truths that destroyed his bogus theories, the guy would go ballistic attacking the author of the documented truth.

I wonder if he ran his public service life with the same demeanor?

Re: Incumbent Hellam Supervisors Booted in Yesterday's Election

By all accounts, he was a fairly decent township supervisor. Until the Purdue plant issue came up and he started posting a lot of stuff about Hexane and how the plant was going to blow up and kill everyone.

Ironically, at the time I was living in the Asbury Point neighborhood in East Manchester and from the highest point from the development, I could see the spot across the river where Purdue wanted to build the plant.

But to try and have a rational discussion with him about it would always turn into a slew of Lew Rockwell articles and claims that everyone was ignorant but him.

He never did have any interest in examination of source material. If it supported his view, he didn't care if they were loons.
