R-Tribe Debate, Vol. 3

Anyone watch this?  I tried, but I just couldn't hang with it very long.

Re: R-Tribe Debate, Vol. 3

It was, by far the worst debate, D or R to date.

The moderators were awful. The questions offered went from attempts at gotcha to trying to bait one candidate to attack another, to simply bizarre.

Ted Cruz brilliantly played that time honored GOP card, attack the "liberal" media. He needed to get some attention, and a great way to do that is to pick a fight. And what fatter target is there than the press. I believe that Newt did this just before South Carolina in 2012 to great effect.

Carson presented a tax plan that was utter nonsense. But, he didn't offer any nazi or slavery analogies last night, so I guess that's a win.

Trump presented one that would explode the deficit by ten trillion.

Christie did well, by pointing out how silly it was to ask presidential candidates about online gambling.

Paul and Christie tried to highlight the actual problems facing SS and Medicare.

Huckabee was pathetic. He tried via an emotional plea to offer himself up as the protector of SS and Medicare without offering any ideas on how to keep those important programs solvent.

Jeb continues to flail.

Kasich, started well and faded.

Fiorina defended her record at HP fairly well. Then she offered an outrageous promise that she could reduce the entire federal tax code to a 3 page document.

Rubio had a good nite, say the pundits. I cannot remember him saying anything interesting on policy.

It was a muddled, stupid affair.

Re: R-Tribe Debate, Vol. 3

I couldn't make it through the whole thing either.  It started out with the question of what is your weakness and only a few of the candidates actually answered the question.  Many just took the time to run at the mouth and not say anything related to the question.  Doesn't anyone listen anymore?

I find I am akways depressed and feeling bad after the Republicans debates.  They are so negative, angry and scared.  This is a toxic party.

Yea, they asked Ben about the CEO who bought the rights to some cancer drug and jacked the price up like 1000%. Asked him if the government should intervene on price gouging,
Old Ben blamed the price increase on "excessive regulation". Did he even listen to the question? It's like they just go off on a canned rant after hearing one trigger word.

Re: R-Tribe Debate, Vol. 3

You people nailed it.  Mostly what I heard is blaming liberals, blamimg democrats, blaming Obama, blaming Hillary, praising Reagen. What uttter nonsense!  Not one substantial plan to fix/correct any program or part of the government.  The whole lot is pathetic.

Happy to say I missed most of it. I caught the last half hour. Didn't hear anything particularly new or exciting. I don't know how many more of these debates are scheduled, but I'm not sure what else we can learn between now and the Iowa caucuses.

Re: R-Tribe Debate, Vol. 3

The candidates' responses (I refuse to categorize them as answers) were pathetic. It was like being a witness to an elementary school playground squabble. When they did open their mouths, the words that tumbled out were either a stump speech (red meat for the base), denial, deflection, or casting blame towards other candidates or the bias of the progressive media. It's the old debate strategy that if you don't want to address the question, just move on to a subject your handlers told you to emphasize. It reminded me of Tina Fey as Sarah Palin saying "I'm going to ignore that question and instead tell you why I love Israel".

Anyhow, they all got to posture behind the podiums and wallow in their own self engrandizing rhetoric for two hours with no expense to their campaign finances.

I'm just saddened to think that these are some of the best people that the major parties have to offer up for the office of president. This country is in big trouble with a fractured legislative branch and borderline incompetent winers and liars seeking the presidency.

Re: R-Tribe Debate, Vol. 3

Part of the problem is the number of people on the stage. For instance, ideally, if you ask candidate Smith what his tax plan is, he should explain in some depth, then you should ask the other candidates the same question. That way people can make a meaningful judgment.

The problem is, going down the line asking the same question of 10 candidates gets to be a snoozefest, and the networks know that. They want the debate to be entertaining, not informative. So, they ask the tax question mainly in the hope of getting a "gotcha" moment, and give A very short  time to respond. The candidate responds with some glib tax slogan, and then the "debate" quickly moves on to fantasy football. What a dog and pony show.
