They Hate Us for Our Freedom

"They Hate us for Our Freedom"
GWB

Um, are you sure about that, George?
I can think of a lot of reasons why people would hate us.

Top U.S. general in Afghanistan: Hospital was ‘mistakenly struck’

A senior U.S. general on Tuesday said the air attack that killed 22 patients and medical staffers in northern Afghanistan was not intended to strike a hospital run by an international aid group, adding to an evolving Pentagon account of one of the deadliest American strikes on a civilian target in recent history.

"They Hate us for Our Freedom"
I have always thought that was the most ridiculous statement.  Why do people fall for that?

Re: They Hate Us for Our Freedom

The statement makes perfect sense when one considers the theocracy of Saudi Arabia.

No churches permitted.

No one may speak ill of Islam.

Our First Amendment is very much hated.

Look at what happened when Florida Pastor Terry Jones (very ill advisedly) burned a Koran.

Re: They Hate Us for Our Freedom

That's the point, Tarnation.  They have a completely different society than we do.  They are tribal and have been brought up completely differently than we have.  They don't know freedom.  Why would they hate it when they have no concept of it?

It is just a phrase specifically put together to stir Americans up.  You can also say they also hate us for our love of our Mothers and our love of apple pie.

Re: They Hate Us for Our Freedom

Well, Tarnation, if someone goes out of their way to insult another's faith, people get very angry. Keep in mind, they were leaving bibles alone, and a Christian was burning a koran. Just sayin.

Sure, they don't allow churches in Saudi Arabia, and that's not right.. But, I have seen no efforts by that government to export that prohibition to our country.

I think that "they" hate us because we bomb them, topple their leaders to replace them ones of our choosing, redraw their borders,  meddle in their affairs, etc.

Absent those things, I don't think that the average Saudi, Iranian, or Syrian would give a hoot whether we have churches or free speech over here. I doubt that you will find anything written by Bin Laden suggesting that the 9/11 attacks were an attempt to close our churches, etc. No, When he got on his soap box it was to rail on about western meddling in the Middle East.

Floretine is right. The phrase is just propaganda.

If you make yourself miserable trying to make others happy that means everyone is miserable.

Kind of a good example of what happens when there's a religious government, isn't it?
