Local Gun Ownership Stats

This info was gleaned from a front page story in the Lancaster Sunday News.  I'm making no judgments, just presenting the facts for now:

Between 2005 and 2014, more than 123,000 handguns were purchased in Lancaster County.  During the period, 60,000 concealed-carry permits were issued.  By the end of 2014, nearly twice as many residents had concealed-carry permits than 5 years earlier.  The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office receives between 25 and 30 applications every day.

During the last 10 years, gun owners used their weapons to shoot assailants or would-be assailants on six occasions.  All six were deemed justifiable self-defense.  In 4 occasions, the assailants died after being shot.

The Trop Gun Shop owner now says 4 of 5 top-selling weapons are compact pistols.

In 2005, 3,989 licenses to carry a firearm were issued in the county.  The numbers remained static until 2009 when the number spiked to 6,263.  By 2013, the number peaked at 10,483.  In York County, issued 41,351 licenses between 2010 and 2014.  Nationwide, permits rose from 4.6 million in 2007 to 12.8 million this year.

5,745 handguns were sold in Lancaster County in 2005.
21,949 handguns were sold in Lancaster County in 2013.

The top-sellers are the Springfield XDS and the Smith & Wesson MP Shield.  Both are 9mm, about 6 inches in length, 4.5 inches high, hold 7 rounds, and sell for $449.

As a sidenote, local representatives, Bryan Cutler and Dave Hickernell are co-sponsers of House Bill 230 which is a bill to eliminate the need for a permit to carry a concealed handgun.  " I don't like having a permission slip from the government to exercise a Constituitional right", Cutler told the Lancaster Newspapers in March.

Re: Local Gun Ownership Stats

I'd be interested to hear his logic path that ended with the conclusion that carrying concealed is a constitutional right.

You're allowed to open carrry in this state, no permit required.

If you make yourself miserable trying to make others happy that means everyone is miserable.
