It Is a New Day in South Carolina

South Carolina House Approves Bill to Remove Confederate Flag

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Confederate battle flag that has flown at the South Carolina State House for more than 50 years will soon be gone after lawmakers capped a tension-filled session early on Thursday and voted to remove it from the grounds of the State Capitol.

The final vote in the State House of Representatives, 94 to 20, was well above the two-thirds majority that was required to move the bill toward the desk of Gov. Nikki R. Haley, a Republican who called for the flag to come down after last month’s massacre at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston.

“It is a new day in South Carolina, a day we can all be proud of, a day that truly brings us all together as we continue to heal, as one people and one state,” Ms. Haley said in a statement after the vote, which she watched from her wing of offices just below the House chamber.

A spokesman for Ms. Haley said the governor would “move quickly” after formally receiving the bill. Once she signs the measure into law, the state has 24 hours to take down the flag, which will be moved to the Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, near the Capitol.

Finally!  It happens!  But we all know the arguments for and against will continue ad nauseam and we will continue to see that flag of racisism and hate perhaps even more, at least for sometime, until it all cools down.

I understand, flowergirl.  Some wingnut not far from here just hung a giant confederate flag on his garage door.
Sigh.

As a side note, is it just a coincidence that the S.C. State Capital didn't hang the damn thing until Civil Rights legislation was passed by Congress and LBJ in the early 60's?

Yea when the defenders of that flag say that it honors heritage and the southern way of life, I have to point out that SC did not put that flag over their capital in 1861. It was more like 1961.

Re: It Is a New Day in South Carolina

Really great, impassioned speech on the matter by South Carolina House Rep, (and Jefferson David descendent) republican Jenny Horne

As an aside, because I'm missing a chromosone or something similar that creates a defect in how I utilize my free time, I ended up watching about 90 minutes of the SC House debate on CSpan 3 last night.

I gotta say, even when discussing a matter of seriousness like this flag issue, the South Carolina legislature seems like a good time. I don't think I had been watching for a minute before I heard a reference in a speech to the South Carolina and Clemson football game. (Which is like the equivilent of Penn State-Pitt back in the day before college football became more about money than tradition) Lots of good natured ribbing among the representatives and even when things get a little heated, they seem to end each argument with a chuckle and a hearty "God Bless You!"

Who woulda thunk it.

What were you drinking at the time, Lager?  I'm trying to find ways to occupy my tv time since the Phils have gone belly-up, but I'm not sure how much I'd have to drink to dump 90 minutes into a S.C. debate on C-span 3.

Although since I''ve become a fan of the Roy Pitz blonde ale, I might pop a couple and give C-Span 3 a shot.  Ha!

I especially like it when a bunch of elected officials line up behind a bank of microphone, in front of a line of TV cameras, posed in a staged event to pat themselves on the back for actually doing something . . . No matter how mundane or insignificant.

Good job SC legislators! Let's party!

Unfortunately, the crisis and ensuing debate over the confederate flag has infiltrated our federal government and interfering with budget talks. The debate is about whether the confederate flag can be displayed in federal cemeteries.

SHEESH!
I'm so happy to see that emotional issues still take precedence over important legislative decisions that will affect all Americans.

I guess that the emotional and less consequential issues make for better dramatic posturing in Washington.
Putting together a budget is hard work, after all.

I think what we saw in South Carolina is a perfect example of why I am so down with the federal government legislators and D.C. in general. Also why I would like to see more power pulled out of Washington and transferred to state and local government.

The South Carolina flag situation could only be fixed by South Carolinians. They had an impassioned debate, voted on it, and were done. No parlimentary tricks. No over the top showboating on national TV. No appeals to the courts.

The system worked the way it was intended. I would like to see more of that.
