Russian Hackers Read Obama’s Unclassified Emails, Officials Say

Maybe just maybe? If NSA was not so busy sucking up everything on US citizens accused of nothing. They might have more time to stop attacks like this? It is stunning that the Russians were able to access some of President Obama’s email correspondence. (Unclass)

WASHINGTON — Some of President Obama’s email correspondence was swept up by Russian hackers last year in a breach of the White House’s unclassified computer system that was far more intrusive and worrisome than has been publicly acknowledged, according to senior American officials briefed on the investigation.

The hackers, who also got deeply into the State Department’s unclassified system, do not appear to have penetrated closely guarded servers that control the message traffic from Mr. Obama’s BlackBerry, which he or an aide carries constantly. But they obtained access to the email archives of people inside the White House, and perhaps some outside, with whom Mr. Obama regularly communicated. From those accounts, they reached emails that the president had sent and received, according to officials briefed on the investigation.

Re: Russian Hackers Read Obama’s Unclassified Emails, Officials Say

I don't think the NSA really plays a role in the whole thing. Here are the groups that seem to be responsible.

DHS that implemented and manages the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center responsible for coordinating cyber and communications warning information across federal, state, and local governments, intelligence and law enforcement communities, and the private sector. This function is the core of the cyber structure of the nation because represents a central government that is able to coordinate the operation made by offices that in the past were totally misaligned. DHS is also responsible for the establishment of the Cybersecurity Information Sharing and Collaboration Program (CISCP), an entity responsible for information sharing between critical infrastructure owners and operators also involving private representatives.

FBI that is responsible for the activities made by the National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force (NCIJTF), an entity that facilitates federal interagency collaboration and serves as a central point of entry for coordinating, integrating, and sharing pertinent information related to cyber-threat investigations. The FBI also runs 65 cyber task forces across the country that integrate federal, state, and local assets.
The Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center is a cybersecurity office that provides real-time network monitoring, early cyber threat warnings and advisories, vulnerability identification and mitigation, and incident response.
The Secret Service that is working to fight cybercrime implementing an agency’s network of 33 Electronic Crimes Task Forces (ECTFs), some of them also localized in Europe, demonstrating the cybercrime has no boundaries.

DHS’s National Cyber Security Division (NCSD) and Science and Technology Directorate also contribute to the development of international cybersecurity standards by participating in standards bodies such as the International Telecommunication Union, the International Organization for Standardization, and the Internet Engineering Task Force.

NSA has no role in protecting the White House's email.
Especially those emails which are unclassified.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

So, they got in through the State Department's unclassified system, eh. Clearly a failure of Hillary Clinton.

And they were able to access unclassified e-mails Obama sent or received on his Blackberry. That means they probably intercepted that JibJab card that he sent to Michele on her birthday.

Shocking news! We should all be outraged!

WRONG! This was with out a doubt sensitive information!

"The Information Assurance mission confronts the formidable challenge of preventing foreign adversaries from gaining access to sensitive or classified national security information. The Signals Intelligence mission collects, processes, and disseminates intelligence information from foreign signals for intelligence and counterintelligence purposes and to support military operations. This Agency also enables Network Warfare operations to defeat terrorists and their organizations at home and abroad, consistent with U.S. laws and the protection of privacy and civil liberties."

Guess you are correct... it's just a big joke!

I think you will find that the NSD directives and structure were remnants of the 1990s structure (see first post here). More recent directives show higerarchical structures more akin to what I posted earlier (see second post here)

You're right. I should be shocked . . . and thoroughly outraged . . . and extremely afraid.

And if it wasn't for the fact it's raining in Bermuda today, I wouldn't even be reading about this massive infringement on my privacy.

Instead, I think I'll have another Dark & Stormy.
