Smith & Wesson, Sturm Ruger rallyShares of the two publicly traded gun makers rallied on Monday, a day after President Barack Obama gave a prime-time address calling for a modest reduction in the availability of firearms. Both Smith & Wesson SWHC, +5.79%  and Sturm Ruger & Co. Though the U.S. doesn’t keep a tally on gun purchases, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation serves as a proxy of sorts. Background checks surged 39% in December 2012, the month of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, and at 2.78 million is the highest month on record. Background checks fell in 2014, but have been stronger this year, with November seeing the highest number of checks in 20 months. (In 2014, background checks submitted to the NICS totaled 20,968,547).

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,”  former vice president Biden said during a campaign event in Texas on Monday. "All men and women created by — you know, you know, the thing.”

Blood money.

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Common, why do you think gun sales and stocks rise after mass murders, or when gun control discussions surface periodically?

In a weird and sick way, gun manufacturers actually benefit from mass killings don't they?  Sort of a backdoor marketing strategy.

This is not surprising news.  Whether it is rational or nor, the fact that the President keeps mentioning gun control every time he talks about this incident of terrorism and the fact that the majority of people don't believe he is taking action to make them safer and they feel the need to take things into their own hand, are driving the increase in the sales of guns and ammo.

I would be shocked if it wasn't a record.  Anecdotally, I have heard a bunch of people talking about buying a gun for the first time or getting a concealed carry permit.

Besides the normal people worried about gun control/confiscation, the added factor of people feeling like they need to protect themselves from a terror incident is going to drive sales

We have more guns per capita than any other country in the world. Just how many guns does every man, woman and child need?
